(More customer reviews)Any true popcorn lover knows the Holy Grail of Popcorn is getting that fresh Movie Theatre taste. Home theatre enthusiasts have created a market for inexpensive "professional" style poppers that can be placed in the living rooom or "theatre room" to add that certain ambience and the taste of movie theatre at home.
Great Northern Popcorn is the supplier of a great many Popcorn supplies and relatively low cost movie theatre style poppers.
There's quite a few bonus features that set this particular popcorn popper from other popcorn poppers at it's price point.
First of all, let me go out and say this is probably the least expensive 8oz kettle you will find. It's price point is right at what Great Northern Popcorn offers for it's 4oz models. I like to consider this the 8oz kettle for the home market.
1. It has a an 8oz kettle which will pop more popcorn per batch than a comparable 4oz machine at nearly the same price.
2. It has a smaller footprint than some of the others which means it can fit in tighter places or smaller counters.
3. It has has a warming element in the floor of the popcorn popper which helps keep the popcorn warm and crunchy. Most other 4 oz machines don't have a heater element in the floor.
4. It is full glass construction. Other units of this price point have a plexi-glass door.
5. It has an Old Maid tray to collect unpopped kernels.
All these features make it worth the investment (The actual popper without the cart costs about 145.00 which is very reasonable.
However I question some of the commercial quality claims.
1. It seems the stirrer is a bit loose in fit which allows kernels to lodge under the stirring bar and cause the stirring bar to jam. This causes an awful noise and I can't imagine it's good for the stirring motor. I definitely recommend pre-heating the oil. This will minimize the time the kernels are in the pot. If you just put the popcorn, salt and oil in at the same time, the stirrer has to move the kernels longer thus increasing the possibility of a jam.
2. It's small foot print makes loading the kettle a bit tricky.
3. I am not sure if this 8oz kettle is the same size as other "8oz" kettles in the market place. It seems a little shallow to me since it seems a number of old maids get spit out during the popping process.
Overall I give this 4 stars. It's clearly not intended for commercial use, and is designed really for the home user. Those users who are looking for true commercial grade poppers should look at the ones made by Paragon. However, expect to pay nearly $260.00 for their entry level 4oz machines and over 500.00 for their 8oz machines. That's for the machine alone.
I am docking a star to the stirring bar jamming I've had so far. Heating the oil definitely helps.
Oh, and By the way, this popcorn tastes best about 1 hour after it's popped. By that time the heater element has dried out the moisture from the popping process and you are left with nice crunchy popcorn.
I highly recommend buying the Great Northern Popcorn 4 oz or 8 oz packs with this machine. If you are a small family the 4oz packs will work just fine. If you like to have some extra popcorn sitting in the popper, or a larger family, go with the 8oz.
You'll never go back to Microwave corn again.
